Been a while

Well, no I have not posted in a while. I guess between getting things ready, going back to school and just not really having much to write about, I kind of slacked off. I think I really only have 1 audience member anyways, maybe I will grab a couple more once my little dude arrives.

So, crazy as it is, my due date is only 1 week from today and really, he could make his entrance at any time now. How weird. I mean, I have been thinking about and preparing for this for almost 10 months now, and at some times, didn't think this time would ever come, but now that it is here, it seems like it has come too fast. I get asked on a daily basis whether I am ready for this to be over, and my honest to God answer is, no. I have really been blessed with the most wonderful pregnancy!

I am, however, very excited to meet this young man that I have gotten to know well for his stretching and kicking. What is he going to look like? What will his personality be like? What will life be like after? Well, I guess these and many other questions will soon be answered and I will share those answers when I get them. Wish me luck!

Just Because

Do you ever just feel like crying? Or do you ever just start crying for no reason at all? Part of this is due to my raging hormones, I do acknowledge this, but part of this is just because. In order to help myself along today, and to give myself a little method to my madness, I put in The Notebook. It made me feel a little better about crying, for now I had a reason.

Ok, so a couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the fact that there are no cute baby clothes out there for boys. Well, I take that back. Above is the "bunting" that I bought to bring Baby Maggio home in......Ummmm, TOO CUTE! I took it to show my mom last night and she would not put it down. In fact she insisted on taking it to work with her to show people. I also made my first trip to Osh Kosh B'Gosh and found quite a few cute and silly things!

On another note, I had to go and have Glucose testing done. Not my idea of a great way to spend the first three hours in the first morning after a long weekend. Plus that fact that they had difficulty finding a vein and now the inside of my arms look a little like I was attacked by newborn vampires (I read Eclipse while in the waiting room!) Oh well no pain, no gain.

Really?

I love being pregnant. I mean I love the feelings, the cravings, and even the weight gain. I love people asking me about being pregnant, I even don't mind the constant advice and scary stories that EVERYONE seems to have to share with me. However, I do find it kind of awkward when I see someone for the first time and they say, with genuine surprise in their voice, "Wow, you look great!". I mean, hey, everyone likes to be told that they look good and I know that it is supposed to be a compliment, but, what did they think I was going to look like? I have put on twenty pounds, so, how good can I actually look? And then, do you really think this or is it just what you think is supposed to be said to a pregnant woman in order to keep them from spontaneously crying?

I know that I have been really lucky so far (knock on wood), no morning sickness, no awful feelings, no gestational diabetes, so perhaps this is contributing to my actually "looking great!". Hmmmmm, something to think about.

Regardless, I must remember this when conversing with other pregnant women in the future.

Baby Boy Blues

I just got back from a crazy shopping spree in the States:
  • 3 days
  • 13 women
  • 14 hours of highway driving
  • 1 Christmas store the size of 5 football fields
  • 1 shopping mall with 142 stores
  • 11 hours of straight shopping in one day
  • $250 later.......

So, it was exhausting, exhilarating, and enjoyable all at the same time. However, it really demonstrated the complete lack of imagination there is being used when it comes to boys clothing. Looking at and buying it is going to become a very important part of my life in a few months and so I thought I would start while engaged in this shopping extravaganza.......I bought 1 outfit. That is all I could find that I thought was fun enough to put my baby boy in. On the other hand, looking at girls clothes is amazing! They have dresses, sandals, skirts, skorts, shorts, t-shirts, purses, hats, and even tutus. Boys basically have shirts and pants, sometimes the odd sweater that is cute. Really, the people dreaming up this stuff have to become more creative when designing boys clothes because that is all they have to work with.

Anyways, that's my rant on that!

Funny story.....

SEA MONKEYS!!!
Originally uploaded by sparkleneely
So, before I get too far out of it and forget them all, I have some funny stories from the school year and when I told the kids that I was pregnant.

Story #1: So, the day that I decided to tell the kids in my class, we were all sitting on the carpet for show and tell. One of the girls had been giving me a funny sideways glance every time we got up to sing the national anthem, focusing primarily on my tummy, so I figured before she just thought I was just getting really fat, I would disclose this exciting information.
When the kids were done their turns at show and tell, I said that I had something for show and tell as well. It went something like this:

Me: Has anyone noticed anything different about Mrs. Beef?
Student 1: You have a new shirt!
Student 2: Your wearing new earrings?
Student 3: Your toes are painted!
Student 4: Your wearing a skirt?
Student 5: You have a tan?
So, to put them out of their misery, I said: Noooo, my tummy is getting bigger.....
To which there was an loud outburst of:
You're going to have a baby!
Me: Yes!
Student 1: When is it going to be born?
Me: November 6
Student 2: How do you know?
Me: (awkwardly) Ummm, well, a baby has to grow inside the mommy for 9 months.
Students: Ohhhhhhh!
Student 2: How long has it been in there so far?
Me: 4 months.
Student 2: (screws his face up) Ya mean, you been pregnant for 4 months and ya didn't even know?!

Story #2: After I had my ultrasound done, I brought the picture to school to show everyone. We were learning about Family Life in class (basically Primary sex ed), so I though seeing the picture might really help them envision what happens as a baby grows. After I pulled out the picture and showed it to them (please refer to picture at the left of this blog) and pointed out the hands, the head, the feet, and the legs, I had one student put up her hand and say:
"Mrs. Beef, your baby looks like a Sea Monkey!" Thanks.....

So the saying really is true: Kids do say the darnedest, and most honest, things!

“From small beginnings come great things.”

Well here I am at the end of a wonderful journey. I started this class thinking that I new quite a bit about computers and ended it realizing that when I started, I really didn't know much at all. However, now, I know more then I did when I started.....does that all make sense?

Now for my final assignment........

1. The most important thing that I learned in Betty Blogger Summer School was that doing things like, creating a blog, starting your own library list, and making a Wiki, are not hard. These are all things that I had heard of, and maybe was a little intimidated by, and now feel quite confident in going back to them and working on them on my own.

B. Well, the most challenging thing, for those of you who know me, was being patient. That has never been one of my strong suits I'm afraid. I learned through this though, that patience truly is a virtue. When something did not work out the way I wanted to on the first try, I had to recheck my steps and try it again. Normally, I would rush through and if I couldn't get it on the first try, throw up my hands and say "I don't get it!" (you know what I'm talking about :). However, I tried very hard to take my time and go back to try it again. So, not only was patience challenging for me, it also became a learning point.

3. Hmmmm, the all important making connections question. I always pound the importance of these questions into my students, but it is not often that I have to complete one. Yes, I do think that these technologies can be helpful in improving library services. I think setting up blogs for different departments of the library would be great, especially for teens. A place where you could go to ask questions about different books, research, and suggestions could come in handy. Of course, this could end up being someones full time job, just keeping up with answering all of the questions, but I think that if they were in place and people knew how to use them, they would be used. You could also use these to advertise new materials coming into the library, using Library Thing or create a Wiki on how to research a paper, or the best place to find certain resources. So, definitely, yes, I think that web 2.0 technologies could be very useful in improving library services.

D. I loved the self-directed learning model. I have never done an online course before, but hope to in the future, and always wondered how they worked. I liked being able to set my own pace. It's also nice to explore on your own, without someone breathing down your back making sure that you are doing it right. It was great having the option to drop in to ask questions or even show Library Lady what your problem was, but not being obligated to get there if you couldn't. It is also neat to think that because of this set up, there were people from all over doing this course as well.

5. I have to say, I am soooooo glad that I took this course. My plan is to now continue with my blog using it as I had planned to, sharing my pregnancy and first time motherhood experiences. I now have the tools to make this a fun and interactive experience which I am going to be proud to share with my family and friends!! It has come at exactly the right time!

Thank you so much Library Lady and BPL, see you at Thanksgiving dinner.........?

I would like to leave you with the words of another genius.....

Libraries ROCK!!!

OOHHHHHHH!!! I love this task! I really enjoyed using Library Thing. It was so easy to use and so much fun. I love how the books just pop up. It was also really easy to add this to my blog and fun adjusting it to how I wanted it to look.

I think that I will use this in order to remember what books I have read in order to remind myself, but also because I always have people asking me whether I can recommend a book. Now I can refer to this or, tell them to look at my list....AWESOME!!

A friend of mine (wink, wink) has this on her blog and I have always admired it and wondered how it was done. Well, now I know and, for all of you G.I. Joe fans out there, knowing is half the battle......Yo Joe!

Reader Shmeader

OK, I tried Google Reader. I typed in the topic I was looking for and I guess I expected a bunch of different sites to pop up about that topic. For example, my topic was pregnancy. I thought a bunch of pregnancy websites would come up with interesting articles about being pregnant. However, what I got was a bunch of articles with the word pregnancy in them, mostly about celebrities. Library Lady, if you read this, maybe you might have some suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong.

So, discovering this, I delved into the sites that were suggested I subscribe to. One of which is Perez Hilton, which I am excited about. I always used to listen to him on the way to work but now that I am on vacation, I will be able to stay up to date with all the latest gossip (please see Guilty Pleasures). I have a few food websites, The Casual Gourmet being one of them, which I am hoping will give me new recipe ideas, now that I am an accomplished chef ;)

All in all, not my favourite task so far, but interesting just the same and I will probably use the Perez Hilton feed quite frequently.

And a Wiki Thanksgiving to all....

Well, that was fun! I am bringing lemon meringue pie (please see my cooking story) and delicious brussel sprouts!!

I have to say, that is a really satisfying and enjoyable site. I really enjoyed the detailed explanation from YouTube!

I definitely think that I could use this, in fact I am going to email Mag and suggest that we use this for our yearly trip to Provincials! It would make planning a large trip or meal or get together so much easier! I might even suggest it to a certain someone who likes to plan in great detail with 150 or so emails!

Published cooking story on Google Docs

http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dg47zt8j_2d2nkp9f5

A cooking story? Hmmmmmm, well, I didn't really start cooking until a couple of years ago. I was always very well taken care of when I lived with my parents. When I moved out on my own, I ate take out or frozen food that could be popped in the oven or microwave. Then, when I moved in with Ry Guy, he did all of the cooking. This was a pretty well known fact. When we would go to his parent's house, his sister was a cooking whiz. She would be asked to make the mashed potatoes, homemade bread, and the dessert. Where as I would be given the job of washing the potatoes, cutting the bread, and putting the dessert on the table.

One day, for Ry Guy's father's birthday, the other ladies had very important things to do and didn't have time to make THE DESSERT, Paul's favourite, lemon meringue pie. I said "I'll do it." Of course the response was, "Are you sure, oohhh, maybe we can find time to do it ourselves." But, when they realized they would not have the time, I was given the responsibility. I was sweating just thinking of how I could screw this one up. I had to make 2 packages of the lemon filling at the same time! Was this safe, would it work? I will not leave you in suspense, it did not work and I did screw it up. I made the filling and put it in the pre-fabricated, not home-made, pie crust to let it set.....it never did set. I am convinced it was because I had to make 2 packages at once, not because I am a complete and utter failure. Luckily, Sandra had another pie crust in the freezer and had the time to make another one.....herself.

Don't feel too bad for me though, I have since learned to cook. I now cook the meals when either of the families comes to dinner and they are damn good if I do say so myself! And, the next year, for Paul's birthday, I made him a lemon meringue pie, with a crust and meringue made from scratch, and a delicious, firm, yet soft, lemon filling!

Flickr fun!

Flickr has endless possibilities, especially for someone who has the patience to wade through all of the material given to you after a search is done. I think that one of the possibilities for the library would be to use flickr for advertising, post pictures of activities and programs that the library has participated in. Also, the library could use flickr to find pictures which relate to different topics, that either they want to advertise or simply for, as our school library does, to help, especially children, to find the topics that they are looking for. That perhaps my be too simple for a public library, but is definitely useful for a school library, where some children can not read yet and pictures are very helpful.

I think flickr will be very helpful as a teacher. I am always looking for different images as teaching tools and now I have somewhere to find them!

Facebook, one of my many addictions!

Well, I have to admit, I have been a member of Facebook for a while now. Actually, Pork a.k.a. Library Lady, introduced me last year before her boycott. I quite enjoy the site myself. I love lurking on other people's lives, probably the reason why I like mls.ca so much as well. It is also a great way to keep in touch with people that I will probably never see face to face again. And, it satisfies 2 of my guilty pleasures, socializing and gossiping!

Delicious.......hmmmmm?

Ok, so I did the whole Del.icio.us thing. It was good for finding pages on topics that you are interested in without having to sift through all of the ones that pop up when you "Google" something. They show the ones that people actually use, so that is helpful as well. I think it would be good for when you find a site that you really like, but might not use very often, so that you don't forget about it. I also think it would be good for someone who is in school and needs to access a lot of different websites frequently.

However, I can't see myself using it every day. I don't know that I would want the hassle of going into it every day when I can put those sites in my address line and access them quickly that way.

It was worth learning about though, thanks Library Lady for the tip!

There's nothing like a good friend!

So, I have a lot of good people in my life, a lot of great friends. However, I have some very special people with whom I meet up with once a day, and, no matter what mood I am in, they can make me laugh. I mean, they can say the same thing over and over again, and I laugh to the point where my cheeks hurt and I may have to make a trip to the bathroom (especially these days!) Would you like to meet them?

YouTube is great because how else would I be able to share this with you, other than having you all over to my house to watch my DVD with me, and I haven't had time to clean the house, so that wouldn't work! Also, you can find videos that you never thought you would see again. For example, who remembers this classic?

Another example would be a video that my sister and I watched over and over again until the tape (that's right, I said tape) practically snapped:

I never thought I would get to see that again!

YouTube is really easy to get around. I like that when you start typing in something, ideas automatically start to pop up for what you might be looking for. Finding the instructions for how to embed a video was also easy to find and to read, and they give you multiple versions of the same clip, if you want to watch shortened or extended version. Under the video, it also gives you the option to email the video you are watching, which is great too. It not only has movie and television clips, but you can also find commercials, this being Ry Guys personal favourite as of late:

All in all, a great way to share your friends!!!

There's a first time for everything!

Well, here I am, my very own blog! I have been reading my sister's blog for a while now and love it! It is one of the first things that I check out when I get home from work, a great way to keep up with what's going on with her.
I decided to take part in the Betty Blogger school so that I too could set up my own blog. I am not only a new Blogger but will also soon be a new mother and thought that this would be a great way to share thoughts, feelings, and stories on that, and afterwards, share stories and pictures of the baby for those who do not live near by.
So, here's to the start of something I am sure will be beautiful!
